MINSTER — Local students had the opportunity to enjoy the spring weather Friday morning while learning about both banking and the history of Minster.
About 65 fifth-grade students, split into three groups, participated in a walking field trip to Minster Bank and the Minster Historical Society in downtown Minster, said fifth-grade teacher Jodi Prenger.
“At the bank, Connie Meiring and Kris Kuck are going to be reading a program called, ‘What Does It Cost Now,’” she said.
ST. MARYS — In a recent survey, Grand Lake Health System’s Transitional Care Unit was ranked the fourth best in the state by the Ohio Department of Aging.
The unit received a 97.58 score for overall satisfaction from the ODA 2011 Resident Satisfaction Survey of Ohio Nursing Homes, said Sara Busacca, nurse manager for the GLHS transitional care unit.
MINSTER — Four local girl scouts were recently honored for completing their Gold Awards — the highest honor in the Girl Scouts of America Program.
Lauren Jutte and Megan Timmerman of Minster and Kristen Hemmelgarn and Molly Hardesty of Maria Stein were among the scouts recognized by the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, in a ceremony held April 23 at the Lima Girl Scout Center-Duffy
Lodge.
“We have a light dinner and then they just have each of us go up and explain our projects,” Jutte said. “
And then they award us with a bunch of different things.”
MINSTER — The Minster Village councilors discussed two ordinances during their meeting Monday, May 1.
In the first ordinance of discussion, councilors went over the second reading concerning vacating a portion of North Street and authorized a quick claim deed, transferring that portion to Precision Strip.
“A notice of public hearing to consider such vacation request was published for six consecutive times in a paper of general circulation in accordance to the Ohio Revised Code,” Village Administrator Don Harrod said.

MINSTER — Each year, boy scouts from around the country complete a community service project — also known as their Eagle Project — in order to earn the highest honor within the Boy Scouts of America program, the Eagle Award.
This year, five scouts from Minster’s Troop 44 — led by scoutmaster, Mark Gaerke — earned their Eagle Awards: Christopher Baker, Jacob Winner, Adam Wehrman, Jonathon Heuker and Kody Seger.
Adam Wehrman is the son of Daniel and Susan Wehrman. A junior at Minster High School, Wehrman joined Troop 44 in 2006 and he has earned 28 merit badges.
MINSTER — Local students will soon send rockets blasting off in Washington, D.C., as they will compete in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) National Finals.
Three different teams at Minster Jr./Sr. High School have qualified for the national finals of the world’s largest rocket contest, which will be held May 12. This marks the third year in a row Minster will be attending the TARC competition, said Minster Rocket Club adviser Ted Oldiges.
FORT LORAMIE — A junior Fort Loramie softball player has set her standards high during her high school career and now made her mark in school history.
Macy Turner set the Lady Redskins school RBI record of 58 against Botkins on Monday, April 16.
FORT LORAMIE — Those who tune in to the game show Let’s Make A Deal may have noticed a familiar face, as Megan Bornhorst of Fort Loramie was selected as a contestant on the April 30 show.
The original taping of her appearance took place in October, 2011, Bornhorst said, when she was in California to support her mother in another game show.
“We actually went down because my mom, Bonnie Rutschilling, went on Wheel of Fortune,” she said. “So we went for that and we got there a day early.”

ST. MARYS — Elementary students from around the county recently had the opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of a hospital.
Joint Township District Memorial Hospital held its annual Make Believe Hospital April 12, 13, 16 and 17. The program consisted of a number of stations inside the hospital, aiming to ease fears and anxieties about medical care, said Anne Larger, outreach coordinator for JTDMH.
“This program has been going on since 1986,” Larger said.
MINSTER — Minster’s 2011 homecoming queen recently competed to be crowned Ohio’s homecoming queen.
Senior Brittany Heitkamp was selected as a finalist — along with 19 other Ohio homecoming queens — for the 32nd annual Ohio’s Homecoming Queen Selection April 14 in Dayton.
Heitkamp said she never expected to be selected to advance to the state competition; in fact, she didn’t have any intention of applying in the first place.
“Honestly, my school counselor came to me and I really had no desire,” she said.
