Council on Aging offers postal security system E-mail

AUGLAIZE COUNTY – The Auglaize County Council on Aging will once again be utilizing the Postal Security Alert Service.  The Auglaize County post offices, law enforcement and the Council on Aging have teamed up to provide security and assistance for Auglaize County citizens over the age of 60.  Letter carriers will keep a watchful eye on those participating in the program.  If the letter carrier notices a build-up of mail, they will alert the respective emergency contacts and the Council of Aging that a resident may be in need of help.

Christina Roby, executive director of the Auglaize County Council on Aging, said the postal alert service is in place to protect the  elderly.
“Precautionary measures are always good when it comes to the elderly,” she said. “Someone could have fallen and are laying in their house.
“The economy’s not good, so we see a lot more break-ins.  It’s our obligation and responsibility to take care of the elderly in Auglaize County and this is just another way for us to do so.”
Roby reminds those using the postal security alert service that it is important to contact your letter carrier if you’re going to be away for an extended period of time.
While the ACCA provides its services year round, Roby thinks it’s a good idea for interested seniors to contact them for services before the long winter months hit.
The council on aging provides services that are helpful in the winters such as information on heating assistance, light housecleaning, friendly visitors and home repairs such as ramp-building for easier home access.
“We keep our tax dollars local,” Roby said.  “It’s all used directly for services for our elderly to help them remain independent and in their home.”
Starting in January the council on aging, located on Indiana Avenue in St. Marys, will offer computer classes on computers purchased through grants from the national council on aging.
Roby encourages seniors in Auglaize County to contact the agency or stop by, even if they don’t think they need the services.
“We do an initial assessment and come into the home and go over our services,” she said.
“We are a multi-purpose senior center, involving people of all ages.  That is what makes things work.  We have that here in Auglaize County.”
The council on aging also offers prescription meals for seniors transitioning back home after a stay in the hospital or short term care facility, transportation wellness information and screenings as well as classes on today’s snior living.
