By ERIC MAKI Staff Writer MINSTER — The Minster Lady Wildcats suffered a huge disappointment at home Thursday as the Versailles Lady Tigers came to Four Seasons Park out for blood and a 13-0 victory.
"I expected Versailles to do good, but I was not expecting us to allow them to come in here and take over," Minster head coach Michelle Pleiman said. "Pretty much everything (didn't come together tonight). Our defense fell apart several times during the game, which can't happen." The game began in a brisk pace, with the Lady Tigers scoring 11 points in three innings before adding to their final count at the top of the fourth. "They (Minster) were ready for the short game. Obviously they've seen our games in the past and they we're playing the corners pretty hard. Good thing for us we can hit the ball pretty well. Whether we need to hit the ball or slap it, we've come along," Versailles head coach Phil Cavin said. Jennifer Worch, Stacey Reed and Megan Shardo all rounded home plate at the top of the first. The second inning saw Karen Smith, Worch, Reed, Mayer and Emily Frey all go home to make the score 8-0 in the middle of the second. "(The girls) got off the bus ready to play and that's what we've been trying to get in the mode of ? not waiting until the final innings to pull it off," Cavin said. "We're 2-0 in the MAC now and we're rebounding from our performance on Monday which wasn't very good. We've had three very good games in a row and we're looking to finish it out on a positive note tomorrow." Try as they might, the Lady Wildcats continued to struggle, unable to keep pace with the nimble and quick thinking Tigers. The team suffered as they were unable to execute fundamentals for the game, from pitching to catching and batting. "We had our fair share of errors," Pleiman said. "We were giving them five and six outs and inning, and you're not going to win ball games on that. Hitting wise we didn't come out aggressive enough with the bat. We were swinging, but they weren't hard, aggressive swings and if you don't do that, you're not going to get the base hits. It was a bad game all around." The execution problem continued into the third inning as Frey, Smith and Mayer all hit home base on a Shardo triple. The final points were put on the board as Emily Bohmen and Frey touched their foot to home plate. For the Wildcats, the loss means it's time to go back to the fundamentals in practice. "We're going to step in and we're going to be doing the same thing we have been doing at other practices ? reestablishing fundamentals. Getting the ball into our gloves, coming up hard with the throw, being aggressive at the plate, not letting the other team run the game. We're just going to (go over) fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals," Pleiman said. The Minster Lady Wildcats face off with the Fort Loramie Redskins in Minster at noon in a double header on Saturday, which will feature a special contribution to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. |
