Reps from Thomas Shelby Co. speak to Rotary Club E-mail
Wednesday, 11 February 2009

New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotarians learned about the St. Marys-based Thomas Shelby Co. at their February 10 meeting.

Scott Bertke and Mike Shelby related that the Thomas Shelby Co. began in 1957 as an electronic products distributor.  The business grew to include distribution of TV towers and antenna rotors (popular at the time) and today serves as a manufacturer's rep, a distribution warehouse, and a manufacturing facility.
Bertke showed examples of the custom-designed, ergonomically-correct consoles and furniture that the company installs for the public safety market.  Since 1975, Thomas Shelby Co. has served 9-1-1 call centers, air traffic control facilities, public utilities, college security offices, and central dispatch facilities with work stations that can be operated either sitting or standing.  Over 200 systems have been installed in the six-state region Shelby serves.
Bertke explained that the people utilizing the work stations cannot always take scheduled breaks, and that the facilities must accommodate long shifts.  "Intensive Use 24/7" chairs are included in the facility package.  The Thomas Shelby Co. also sells and installs flooring systems that allow wiring to be easily accessed when equipment is moved or new equipment is added.
Mike Shelby stepped up to describe how Thomas Shelby Co. has positioned itself for future success by offering long-term service contracts on all the equipment they install.  Shelby also noted that the manufacturing function of the company means local employment, and local purchasing of component parts for the items they assemble.  He remarked that the company has been in St. Marys for over 50 years, yet few people know what they do.
The New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary Club meets each Tuesday morning at 7:30 for breakfast at Speedway Lanes in New Bremen.  Guests are always welcome for the food, fellowship and informative program.
