Minster Memorial Invitational Recap E-mail

MINSTER - The Minster Memorial Invitational came to Minster High School Tuesday and despite the cold and wind that set in as the evening wore on, records, one after the other, shattered time and time again.

"The weather was good for a change. It's late, and we knew it was going to be late when it got done. It seemed like everybody did all right. (The teams) got a lot of records here today," Minster boys track head coach Larry Topp said.

New records were set in the girls 4x400 relay, with New Bremen breaking its own record of 4:13.56 from last year and taking it down to 4:12.45; the girls pole vault with Versailles' Amanda Barlage breaking her own 11' record from last year and raising the bar to 11'3"; Coldwater's David Wilker broke the boys 3200 meter record of 10:05.10 and set the new record at 10:03.93; New Bremen and St. Henry boys jointly shattered the boys 4x200 meter relay record of 1:34.85, taking it down to 1:33.92 (NB); Houston's BJ Elliott vaulted six-inches higher than the previous boys pole vault record, which is now set at 14' even; and Minster's own Andrew Meyer broke the records in boys shot put and boys discus.

"The shot and discus was an amazing thing tonight with just over 58 feet and 160 feet in the discus. That was Meyer and he set two meet records," Topp said.

Overall the Minster Lady Wildcats took first place for the girls with 92 points, followed by Versailles with 83 points and Delphos St. John's with 75.5 points.

"This is a pretty good win," Minster girls track head coach Cindy Dircksen said. "Coming back from Milton where we came in second and running Thursday, Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday - that's four meets in eight, nine days. That's a lot of competition, but it's a very good win for the girls. There's nothing better than winning the Minster Memorial."

St. Henry took the boys division with 117.5 points, followed by New Bremen with 72 points and Minster with 67 points.

"Some good things and some things we need to work on. I thought Bryce Bergman had a nice day in the hurdles and our two sprint relay teams did very well for us. Our 4x4 ran RPR for the year, so real happy for that. This is a big meet with a lot of great competition, so for our boys to finish as runner-ups, we've got to feel good about that. Minster's got a great team, we were lucky enough to get ahead of them tonight. St. Henry has an exceptional team this year. We've just got to keep closing that gap," New Bremen head coach Garry Jones said.

New Knoxville, a late entrant into the tournament, also faired well, taking eighth place in the girls division with 34 points, and 16th place in the boys division without a complete boys team.

"I thought we did pretty good. We basically, we weren't originally in the invitational when it was scheduled on Saturday. But a couple teams dropped out - our girls team got in, but our guys didn't. We were only allowed to submit our guys for events that had opening," New Knoxville coach Nick Wirwille said.

Overall, Minster took first place in the girls 800 meter run, courtesy of Brigitte Sherman; the girls 3200 meter run, courtesy of Bernadette Burke; the girls 4x800 meter relay; girls shot put, courtesy of Becca Steinemann; and boys shot put and discus, courtesy of Andrew Meyer.

New Bremen's 4x400 girls relay team took first place, along with the boys 4x200 meter relay team.
