ST. MARYS — Area residents had an opportunity to learn about the National Guard on Thursday evening, talking to soldiers, watching videos and playing games at the Armory.

“Guard Experience Night is a way that local citizens can learn more about the guard in a very non-pressure environment,” SSG Shaun Ruvoldt said.
While snacking on pizza, attendees could watch videos showing the ins and outs of the National Guard, sign up for the ASVAB test and pick up free items like a T-shirt and informational brochures.
“We have a weapons display and soldiers in here to answer questions,” Ruvoldt said.
Outside, attendees could climb vehicles and participate in a Halo 3 tournament.
“They can enjoy themselves and have a good time,” he said. “It’s a good way to get the National Guard’s name out.”
In addition to attracting Memorial High School students, Ruvoldt said he also invited parents and teachers to partake in the event that began at 5 p.m.
“Even if they haven’t heard of the what the Guard does, this creates awareness,” he said. “It helps (people) understand the military presence in St. Marys. It’s always good to understand about what local military is in the area.”
Sophomore Duncan Hansel said the games attracted him to the event.
“I’m here for the Halo tournament,” he said.
Freshman Garrett Rohr said he was curious about the Guard.
“I came to have a good time and check out what it was,” he said.
Junior Brandon Stoker said Ruvoldt had asked him to come to the event to talk because he is joining the National Guard.
“I’m going into the Guard,” Stoker said, adding why he decided to join. “It’s like a family thing.”
Stoker said his grandfather was in the Guard, as well as his uncle and sisters.
Freshman Linda Oen was there to support Stoker and had thought about joining herself.
“I’m thinking about it because of the college thing,” she said.
Celina resident Shelly Hines attended the event for someone other than herself.
“It’s for my grandson,” she said.
