By Allison Roorda Community Post Swimming lessons are well under way at Minster Municipal Swimming Pool. With 26 kids in the first session of the season and 27 kids in Kinderkamp, mornings at the pool are a popular place.
Kinderkamp, for 5 year olds, is a morning-long camp for the kids at the pool. “We just play for a while, we have arts and crafts and then we come over to the pool and have lunch,” explained instructor Lindsey Piening. “It’s not really teaching,” said Kerri Watercutter. “It’s more fun.” Separated by level and swimming skills, the lessons at the pool range in age from 5 year olds to 9 year olds. Children are taught how to float, free-style backstroke and then basic elementary strokes in the upper levels. The classes have an average of 2 to 3 kids per instructor. “I’ve always like little kids,” said Piening of being an instructor for the lessons. “I want to go into elementary education, so it’s practice.” “I’ve always liked teaching,” agreed Erica Poeppelman, another instructor. The first session ends on July 3, followed by the second session of lessons from July 6 to 17, and a final one from July 20 to 31. Lessons are separated into Level I for Preschoolers, Level II for Beginners and Level III for Advanced Beginners. |
