It must not be the shoes.
Minster record-setter Andrew Meyer headlined a group of Minster and New Bremen track athletes who advanced to the state tournament on Friday night at the Div. III regional track meet at Piqua High School.
The Wildcat strongman set a regional record with a put of 59 feet, seven inches - and he set it in regular tennis shoes after he wasn't happy with his traction with shot shoes during his first few puts.
"I've never thrown in my tennis shoes before," Meyer said. "I threw one with my shot shoes. My first throw, I just got one in that I knew would probably win the regional."
Meyer's first throw of around 53 feet would have ended up winning the event. Then he aimed for the record.
"I can't complain," Meyer said. "I've got to take care of some business at state," he said.
Meyer finished fourth in the discus on Wednesday.
New Bremen's boys (39 points) and girls (42.5 points) teams both finished fourth, while the Minster girls finished fifth (42 points).
Meyer was not the only one to be setting records.
The New Bremen girls four-by-400-meter relay team of Christine Schwartz, Amber Niekamp, Lori Timmerman and Taylor Jones set a regional record with a 4:00.99 time, building an early gap only to hold down the final 100 meters against St. Henry's team.
As Taylor Jones headed down the final stretch, the large contingent of Cardinal fans roared her on.
Jones also advanced as an individual in the 400-meter dash with a third place finish and a 59.61 time.
New Bremen's Bryce Bergman advanced in two events, the 110-meter hurdles with a third place finish, and 300-meter hurdles by winning it with ease.
"It feels great," Bergman said after the 300-hurdle win. "Going into the final hurdle, I tried to build as much momentum as I could."
He noticed how the New Bremen fans flocked to the meet, as well.
"We have some screamers up there," he said.
Bergman credited the district he comes out of for preparing him for the regional event.
"Seven out of the top 10 hurdlers are in our district," Bergman said.
Bergman was third in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.05-second time.
Minster's Bernadette Burke and Lei Bornhorst dominated the 3200-meter run, finishing first and second, matching each other stride for stride the whole way.
Burke finished in 11:33.81, while Bornhorst was just three seconds behind with a time of 11:36.59.
Did they plan it that way? No.
But it is not out of the ordinary for the two to be stride for stride in the long distance run.
"It depends," Burke said.
"It depends on how we're feeling," Bornhorst echoed.
Being in vicinity of each other "pushes both of us," Burke said.
The duo was the first of four Midwestern Athletic Conference girls to finish in the two-mile run in a row, making it an all-MAC podium.
The New Bremen girls four-by-200-meter relay team of Olivia Bergman, Schwartz, Niekamp and Jones took fourth and will also advance after a blazing 1:47.5 time.
Scott Schnelle took second in the high jump for New Bremen with a jump of six feet, four inches.
Brigitte Sherman came in third in the 1600-meter run with a 5:13.41 time and will advance.
Taylor Jones took third in the 400-meter dash with a 59.61-second time.
The meet dodged any sort of precipitation, even with ominous clouds forming at times.
The Minster boys team finished 13th, collecting 21 points.
The New Knoxville girls' team had four points and the boys' team had five points.
Renee Dicke of New Bremen finished sixth in the girls' 110-meter hurdles with a 16.68-second time and took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 47.65-second time. Olivia Bergman took sixth in the girls' 100-meter dash for New Bremen with a 13-second time.
New Knoxville's Sam Wierwille finished in eighth in the 1600-meter run with a 4:39.39 time.
Joby Stechschulte, of Minster, and Tony Kremer, of New Bremen, also ran in the mile run.
The Minster girls' four-by-100-relay team of Jackie Richard, Tiffany Olberding, Jenni Richard and Alyssa Kemper finished in fifth place with a time of 51.51 seconds.
Jeff Kremer, of New Bremen, took fifth in the boys' 400-meter dash with a 51.21 time.
Sherman of Minster took eighth in the 800-meter run (2:24 time). New Bremen's Lori Timmerman also ran in that event. Minster's David McGowan took eighth in the 800-meter run, with a 2:00.84 time. Olivia Bergman was fifth in the 200-meter dash with 26.54 seconds.
Jonny Phillips of New Knoxville and Minster's Kregg Olding competed in the boys' 3200-meter run.
In the girls' four-by-400-meter relay that New Bremen won, New Knoxville's team of Haley Kruse, Casey Horstman, Katie Wirwille and Meredith Fledderjohann, finished fifth with a 4:04.39 time.
The Minster team of Cecilia Slonkosky, Kerri Watercutter, Katie Dahlinghaus and Brigitte Sherman finished in seventh with a time of 4:12.88.
The state meet takes place on June 1 and 2 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. |
