By Jon Frey Sports Correspondent VERSAILLES – In non-league action Saturday, the Lady Redskins of Ft. Loramie traveled to take on the Lady Tigers of Versailles.
The first quarter started as Versailles scored two quick baskets, pushing the score to 4-0 already two minutes into the game. The second quarter wasn’t much different as Loramie was able to come back by only a few points, but a Laura Schlater three pushed Versailles’ margin further away. Janel Olberding struck back for Loramie, though, with a three of her own, later ending the half at 24-18 with the ‘Skins still trailing. The next half started quickly for the Redskins as several Versailles turnovers led to Loramie points, with steals by Olberding leading to a Clair Ruhenkamp and Tessa Benanzer lay-up. Ruhenkamp later stole the ball and scored two more for Loramie, giving the ‘Skins their first lead of the game at 26-24. A turnover from Loramie helped Versailles as the Tigers tied it back up. An and-1 from Versailles’ Bethany Ahrens brought the Tigers’ lead back up to three. A few more buckets ended the third quarter at 35-29 with the Tigers leading. The fourth quarter held much excitement as Ruhenkamp stole a pass and scored to boost the Redskin score. But this was soon followed by a lay-up from Megan Campbell of Versailles. Kara Gasson of Loramie then stole another pass and found Ruhenkamp to bring Loramie to a five-point margin with 2:08 remaning. Later an Olberding steal led to a Gasson lay-up, bringing the Redskins to within two now at 1:15 left on the clock. Then at just 53 seconds in regulation, Benanzer scored a three basket and put the Redskins up by one over the Tigers. An Ahrens lay-up, though, would later seal the game, despite final attempts at the basket by Loramie, ending the game at 47-46 with a Versailles win. Ruhenkamp led the Redskins with 14 points while Olberding had 12. Gasson had 8 and Tessa Benanzer ended with 7.
