By Allison Roorda Community Post MINSTER – During halftime of the boys’ Minster vs. Coldwater ball game at Minster Middle School, Don Schmitmeyer was named the 2009 Minster Athletic Boosters Booster of the Year.
The Booster of the Year award has been a tradition for the Minster Athletic Boosters since 1990. “It is our way of saying thank you for all the time, hard work and dedication that members of our community have given to the Boosters over the years,” said President of the Minster Athletic Boosters Bryan Niemeyer. “This year’s honoree is certainly no exception.” Schmitmeyer has been a member of the Boosters for more than 30 years since he began in the mid 1970s. He also served as the Booster president in 1977 and 1978. “Among his many accomplishments was his role as one of the founding fathers of Minster Memorial Field,” Niemeyer said when presenting the award. “He also spearheaded the campaign to install the all-weather track and to obtain the current bleachers on the home side of the football field from the University of Dayton’s Welcome Stadium. In addition, this year’s honoree played a pivotal role in establishing the Minster Memorial track meet and spent countless hours over the years at the meet parking buses, working the finish line, and organizing concessions.” Besides the Athletic Boosters, Schmitmeyer has also been involved with the community of Minster in other ways. He is a former Minster school board president and a lifetime member of the Minster Civic Association. Other organizations Schmitmeyer has been actively involved with include the Knights of Columbus, the TPA, the St. Augustine Orphan Society, the American Legion, the Minster Eagles, the Minster Jaycees and the Lake Loramie Improvement Association. Schmitmeyer lives in Minster with his wife of 52 years, Marilyn( Menker) Schmitmeyer. He has four children, Mark, Doug, Bruce, and Jill Albers. |
