By Lauren Turner Sports Correspondent As the Fort Loramie boys traveled their way to Piqua for the third round of tournament action, they knew they would have their hands full with the Houston Wildcats.
The two teams had met twice before in regular season with Houston coming out victorious both times. Again, the tough Houston team fought their way to a sectional championship by defeating the Redskins for the third time this season. A big second half allowed the Wildcat's to take their 56-38 win. After just one quarter of play, neither team had found their momentum as the score was 9-7 Houston. Out of 21 shoots attempted by the two teams in the first quarter, only seven were made. A better second quarter for Houston allowed them to start their run, which was too much for the Redskins to handle. But just when Houston thought they had the lead going, Kyle Gasson of Fort Loramie was able to cut it back. Once Fort Loramie got to where they needed, Houston went on a seven point run to give them a 27-15 point lead going into the second half of play. Despite hopes of picking up on the offensive end in the second half, Fort Loramie could not. Then on the defensive end of the floor Dustin Schwable of Houston caused the Redskins trouble as he scored six quick points inside. Finally, senior Mitch Westerheide from Fort Loramie put points on the board for his team with his pull up jumper at the 2:42 minute mark. Westerheide's effort was too late by then as Houston had a strong 40-17 point lead. As the fourth quarter came underway, Fort Loramie applied full court pressure. The defense did cause Houston trouble as they turned the ball over six times. Westerheide again had big points in the second half. Before the teams knew it, the game was within 10 points. Houston called a time out when the score reached 46-36. Despite the continuous effort by Fort Loramie, Houston was too hot from the free throw line when the Redskins' only option was to start fouling. As Houston went 8-10 from the line at the game, they put the game to an end to claim the rights to play in the district finals. Leading scorer for Fort Loramie was Mitch Westerheide with 14. Houston was led by Dustin Schwable with 20 points. Fort Loramie ends their season at 15-8 while the Wildcats continue on with their 19-4 record. |
