By BRIAN SMITH Sports Correspondent MINSTER – Fort Recovery did everything and anything to get runs home. They stole, they bunted and they tricked.
The Indians picked up a 4-0 win over New Bremen in a sectional final on Thursday night at Minster on a cold, blustery night that felt more fall-like than weather for a baseball season winding down. Fort Recovery had just five hits, but used every means possible to get single runs in four consecutive innings off New Bremen starter Cory Barlage. It’s most daring exploit came in the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs. With Travis Hart at the plate, runner at first base Cody Fiely took off for second base in an attempt to get in a run down while the other runners stayed at their stations. As New Bremen catcher Matt McCollum ran towards Feely and threw to the shortsop for the out, Bobby Rammel raced home from third before the tag on Fiely could be made. “That’s what we do,” Fort Recovery coach Shane Mckibben said. “We try to make things happen on the bases.” The Indians picked up the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly by Brady Kahlig after Clint Tobe walked, stole second base and went to third base on a wild pitch. In the third, Bobby Rammel made it around the bases after bunting his way on base, moving up via a wild pitch and came home on another sacrifice fly. Travis Hart scored in the fourth on a walk, a stolen base and two wild pitches. “Cory got hurt with some balls in the dirt,” New Bremen coach Greg Cox said. “But he’s really emerged this season. He was really a pleasant surprise for us on the mound this season.” While Barlage had to deal with the speed and guile of the Fort Recovery running game, the Indians’ Greg Kahlig was just dealing. He struck out eight batters and allowed just four hits over seven innings. The lanky right hander only allowed one runner to get to third base when the bases were loaded with two outs in the third inning " the lone threat by New Bremen all night. “Greg has pitched in these type of games before,” Indians coach Shane McKibben said. “He got ahead early in the count.” The Cardinals loaded the bases with a walk to Derrick Bruggeman, a single by Corey Jutte and Matt McCollum reached after being hit by a pitch. “We loaded the bases and we had our best hitter in Anthony Moeder up there,” New Bremen coach Greg Cox said. “So I was feeling comfortable. Kahlig just made his pitch and got out of it. We never strung any hits together.” |
