From Staff Reports The Fort Loramie Redskins defended their title as the reigning state champions when they ousted both Franklin Monroe and Delphos Jefferson in the regional tournament last week.
In the regional semifinal on Thursday, May 29, the Redskins overcame a 7-1 deficit to defeat Franklin-Monroe with a final score of 17-7. On Friday, May 30, Delphos Jefferson started out ahead, beginning with a lead of 2-0 before rising to 6-4 when Fort Loramie threatened. “This team keeps you on your toes, but they keep their cool when they’re behind,” said Fort Loramie coach Bill Sturwold. The fifth inning in the Division IV regional championship was the turning point. The Redskins scored three runs in the inning, thanks to four walks and an RBI single by Andy Schieltz, and took the lead away from Jefferson. Neither team scored for the rest of the game, making the final score 7-6. Andy Long, the lefty Redskin pitcher, turned in an efficient game. He allowed only 13 hits against Jefferson’s lineup and brought his record to 9-2. “Andy is a big-game pitcher and was hitting his locations,” Sturwold said. “He threw four or five pitches in the sixth for three quick outs, and that was huge. With the treetops blowing out here, you have to play smart and don’t let two-run innings turn into five.” |
