By Allison Roorda Community Post The double header between Minster and Fort Loramie's ACME baseball teams ended in a win for each team, despite a shortage of players and pitchers.
Minster won the first game with a final score of 3-2, all while playing shorthanded. “We had 28 kids at Findlay basketball camp,” Minster head coach Mark Wiss explained, “and we made it through the first game with just nine players. That's all we had.” Fort Loramie was the first to score in the first inning, but Minster answered in the second inning with a run of their own. Robbie Gruber opened the bottom of the third with a single and moved around the bases on Tim Brown's single. Gruber stole home on a wild pitch by Fort Loramie's Cody Albers. Fort Loramie tied it up again when Mitchell Raterman opened with a triple then came home on a single RBI. “They played great,” said Fort Loramie head coach Ryan Schulze. “When you play a double header, sometimes it seems like it drags on a lot. For them to come back and hit the way they did and stay in it, stay focused, was great.” The game stayed tied until the bottom of the final inning, when Austin Baumer singled due to a missed catch by Fort Loramie. He stole second and advanced to third on Gruber's forced out. Baumer came home on Brown's single to win the game. “Josh Corbit pitched a great game for us with 11 strike outs,” said Wiss of the first game. “We had a couple eighth graders playing for us. We needed a great pitching situation, and he [Corbit] gave it to us.” The second game started out much the same way, as Minster scored first when Brian Mueller singled then stole his way around the bases until he finally came home on a wild pitch. Fort Loramie tied up the score in the second inning, then came through with two runs by Zach Eilerman and Raterman in the third. “We came through,” Schulze commented. “The kids came through in clutch situations, and got big hits.” The fourth inning was Minster's time to catch up. After one run by Fort Loramie in the top of the inning, Minster came up to bat. Baumer and Corbit both singled. Baumer stole home on a wild pitch, and Alex Schmiesing walked to first. Corbit and Schmiesing came home on Sam Otting's forced out at first to tie up the score. “The second game when I got my players back, I thought we'd be okay,” said Wiss. “Loramie got up on us early, and we were fighting from behind the whole game. We don't play well from behind.” Loramie continued to dominate in the fifth inning, adding three to their score, while Minster scored one run due when a walk forced Otting home for a free score. “Defense played sharp all day,” said Schulze. “Always beneficial when you're a coach.” With neither team scoring in the sixth inning, that left the seventh inning for Minster to catch up. However, Fort Loramie took to the plate and added three more runs to their score. Andy Schieltz singled and came home on a triple RBI. A single and two walks provided two more runs, and Minster was looking at a score of 10-5 at the bottom of the seventh. “Loramie hit the ball very well in the second game, I'll give them credit,” said Wiss. “They got some big hits, and it was just enough to win.” Schmiesing singled after one out and advanced to second on another out. Otting's single RBI brought Schmiesing home before the final out ended the game with a score of 10-6 for Fort Loramie. |
