By Laura Mazur Community Post Keeping up-to-date is important in the local community. And to stay current, a number of updates were given last last week's Minster Civic Association meeting.
Held at Four Seasons Park, the biggest update of the meeting came from Minster Historical Society member Mary Oldiges. “We're creating a new museum. Right now, we're knee-deep in the remodeling project,” she said. Located in the west side of the building where the Minster Police Department is housed on Fourth Street, the organization has found the safest spot in town. Artifacts of the town were formerly housed in the upstairs casing area of the F.J. Stallo Memorial Library, but with the number of items collected, Minster's past has outgrown its shell. The museum will is projected to be completed this fall with help from community members. A number of rooms are slated to be included in the museum, such as Hometown Heroes and genealogy. “I think it's going to be a great asset to Minster. Minster's our home and it's more than just an accumulation. I think we need to preserve and protect a good bit of it,” said Oldiges. Randy Houseworth, the new police chief in Minster, spoke on his new duties. Having served the last seven years of his 23 in law enforcement as sergeant of the New Bremen Police Department, he said he hopes he can do this new position well. He also hopes to get manpower issues under control by Oktoberfest and a new cruiser is to come to the department this month. Ryan Geise, the new parks director, was also introduced. The new director is busy reshaping the ball diamonds at Paris Street Park for anticipation of 85 little league teams running the bases in tournament. Association President Jack Buschur reported on the organization's first Bock and Rock beer tasting event at the end of May had $4,000 in funds collected. “For it being the first year, the committee did a super job. They really worked their tails off,” said Buschur. With only having been put together in nine weeks, the Bock and Rock committee pulled it off and had something to show for it—an attendance of 930 people. Next year's event is being moved up in the month, however, being set for May 16. Coming up on Aug. 1 is the Minster Civic Association golf outing at Arrowhead Golf Course, in Minster, with proceeds benefiting the Minster-Jackson Township Fire Department and the Minster Area Life Squad. Buschur also noted that the association has a number of members who have served and have 70-plus years of experience on their lifetime resume. The association's plan is to invite this group to an upcoming meeting to be recognized as Lifetime Civic members. The civic association is looking for names and contact information of anyone who might qualify for this prestigious recognition. The next meeting of the Minster Civic Association is scheduled for Aug. 26 at the Wooden Shoe Inn. |
