By Allison Roorda Community Post Brian Tontrup's job is all about keeping people in shape.
“I've always enjoyed keeping myself fit,” explained Tontrup. “So I thought I'd get a job doing something that I like.” Tontrup runs a training program through local YMCAs, splitting his time between the Southern Auglaize County Branch in New Bremen on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the Celina branch on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. “It covers everything from weight loss, weight gain, nutritional training and education,” Tontrup said. He currently has about 20 trainees, including both individuals and classes for sport-specific training. He also works with spring training for local sports teams. “I work with their lateral and unilateral muscles and running,” said Tontrup. Tontrup's training regime includes work with weighted bars, mats and exercise balls, with a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercises. “The old myth is that you have to use weights to work out,” he said. “I'll get you on a ball and get you just as good a workout, including cardiovascular and muscle movement. It's all in how you use it.” Tontrup's business is a new venture and one he plans on turning into a full-time career. He received his NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) certification from the Pinnacle Career Institute in Kansas City, Mo., earning a degree in physical training through their online program. He went to boot camp with the Professional Fitness Institute in Las Vegas and also took his national test there. “The program isn't even a year old,” he said. “So it's going to take some time to grow.” Despite only being in the area a year, Tontrup says he doesn't see people falling away from training. Tontrup has had a couple people cancel their training sessions because of family obligations, but he is optimistic about the program in general. “People see the results, and they're pretty happy with it,” commented Tontrup. “I've got pretty much the same group I started out with.” Those interested in contacting Tontrup about personal training can either call him at 419-236-2745 or contact him by email:

“With a personal trainer,” explained Tontrup, “not only are you getting proper instruction, you're also being held accountable, and you're getting the benefits of working out and living a healthy lifestyle.” “Make sure your trainer is certified,” Tontrup warns. “There are a lot of people out there, and if you don't know what you're doing, you could really hurt yourself.” |
