MINSTER – The Class of 2003 team won the Minster Alumni Softball Tournament for the fifth year in a row last weekend.
The 8th annual tournament featured classes as young as 2008 all the way down to the “73 and beyond” class. The oldest Minster alum to compete was 73-year-old Katie Horstman from the class of 1953. The tournament has grown since its inception in 2001. Eleven teams have been added to bring the grand total to 32. The three-day tournament has been mostly dominated by the class of 2003, which has won every tournament since 2004. Even the team's shirts this year complained about “carrying” the tournament. The class of 1987 has won twice and the class of 1995 won one tournament. It all started when Jeff Roetgerman's (class of 1987) softball team wanted to start a tournament. They joined forces with the Minster Eagles and the Minster Fire Department and the rest is history. The fire department now takes care of the food every year to raise money for the squad. The Class of 2003 team receives t-shirts, free beer and free entry into next year's tournament. The winning team also has its name put on the plaque that is displayed at each year's tournament. |
