MARIA STEIN — Wapakoneta was a big winner on Thursday evening.
During the Greater Grand Lake Region Visitors Center annual awards reception held at Moeller’s Brew Barn, Wapakoneta won the 2020 Stahr Award for the community spirit it’s shown for over the last year-plus during the pandemic.
The Stahr Award is given annually to a group, organization or tourist industry company or business, honored and recognized for its outstanding contributions to the development and promotion of tourism in the Auglaize and Mercer county area.
Normally the award is reserved for one organization or business, but Wapakoneta as a whole won for refusing to let COVID shut down its community.
“Instead of highlighting one organization or one particular business, we are honoring a pretty incredible group of people, businesses and organizations that just refuse to let COVID shut their community down,” said Dave Faler, Grand Lake St. Marys State park manager, who presented the award. “They put on their thinking caps and thought outside the box and did all they could to continue events and activities that were canceled elsewhere.”
